Era of Justice Campaign: There is no climate justice without debt justice, and no debt justice without climate justice
As the United Nations Financing for Development Conference in Sevilla approaches, Eurodad is promoting its Era of Justice campaign to promote a fairer and more equitable world, addressing the interconnected issues of economic justice, climate justice, and gender justice. The campaign aims to mobilize European citizens to hold leaders accountable for addressing interlinked crises. It is a collaboration between ACEP, CNCD.11.11.11, CCFD - Terre Solidaire, erlassjahr, Eurodad, Financial Justice Ireland, ODG - Debt Observatory in Globalisation, Reflex, and Za Zemiata.
From June 30th to July 3rd, the FfD4 is preparing to deliberate on topics such as progress on the Monterrey Consensus, the Doha Declaration, and the Addis Ababa Agenda. Since the last Financing for Development Conference, development assistance has been under increasing pressure, alongside new financing commitments to address climate change and preserve global biodiversity. As the sustainable development finance landscape becomes more complex, the UN is in a unique position to implement an innovative and effective financing approach, aligning climate, development, and social goals. The Era of Justice calls upon governments, international institutions, and private creditors to take urgent, fair, and progressive action on this issue, starting at the FfD4.
The campaign connects the climate crisis to the unsustainable debt crises in the Global South, as the cost of servicing external debts reduces budgets for essential services, such as climate resilience, education, and health services, detrimentally impacting their development and people’s livelihoods. It also limits their ability to invest in the energy transition and to contribute to climate-friendly practices. The wealthiest countries that have contributed the most to climate change deepen this injustice with unsustainable debt burdens, creating loops of debt and extreme climate events that trap countries in the Global South in endless debt crises, exacerbating climate emergencies.
The Era of Justice campaign invites everyone to join forces and bring about structural change, starting with sustainable and just financial goals. Focusing on young Europeans, the campaign asks people to hold European leaders accountable to dismantle unsustainable and unethical ways of managing debt crises.
The campaign promotes various avenues of action for young people and the public: petitions, posting, creating your own poster, organizing all the way to Sevilla, and more. Learn more at: eraofjustice.org
The FfD4 is taking place from June 30th to July 3rd, 2025, in Sevilla Spain. The Era of Justice campaign invites everyone to sign their petition, share graphics, and even attend the conference. The UN FfD4 Conference will discuss issues related to financing sustainable development, such as implementing financing strategies and addressing challenges and opportunities within the global financial system. The main focus of the event is on implementing the 2030 Agenda (SDGs), addressing financial gaps, and reforming international financial architecture, along with progress on declarations from past FfD Conferences. Participants will include leaders from governments, international organizations, financial institutions, civil society, and businesses to gather and negotiate solutions. Various organizations are calling for European leaders to adopt reform on debt architecture, increased climate finance, transparency, and a decision-making shift towards the Global South. As this conference is the Era of Justice campaign’s first target, they are working to educate the public on global debt issues and maintain an active role in these negotiations.
The United Nations Civil Society Conference offers civil society organizations the opportunity to introduce their global perspectives on a specific issue. This international forum brings together various viewpoints and backgrounds from all over the world. The goal of this conference is to strengthen collaborations between local communities and global institutions. As this campaign comes from various CSOs, this conference is important to launching the campaign and getting other organizations involved with and aware of the cause.
Civil Society working together with one voice to transform our global economic system & advance the systemic changes we urgently need to see.
