The Nature Conservancy: The Fight to Preserve Nature - EU Parliament Adopts Landmark Law: Restoring 20 % of EU's Land and Sea
The current goal of the EU is to restore 30 % of poor conditioned habitats to better conditioned by 2030, and then continue to increase this amount until 90 % is achieved by 2050. Cooperation by all member states is crucial in meeting these targets and should adopt national restoration plans detailing how they intend to achieve better habitats and not allow them to deteriorate again.
“Today’s vote to get the Nature Restoration Law over the finish line offers fresh hope for Europe’s ability to combat the worst effects of climate change and biodiversity loss for decades to come” says Andras Krolopp, The Nature Conservancy Head of Biodiversity Policy for Europe. Tackling a major issue such as habitat degradation is a necessary step towards a greener future in the EU.
Shifting to what can be done next, more can be done such as continuing to improve air quality and stopping the usage of fossil fuels. The fact that key measures such as improving farming sustainability and agriculture were shut down while negotiating only shows the need for improved collaboration in Europe if the continent hopes to reach its targets by 2050. However, for now, the fight for preserving nature lives on through passing this law. (Author: Liam McCarthy)
